| Overview | |
The
objective of VO2max is to navigate through a 3D terrain simulation from
the start point via a series of control
points to the finish point using information
from the map and compass. The
control points are described on the "control card" below the main 3D view
window. This is a familiar situation to orienteers, rogainers and many
other outdoor enthusiasts. |
|
| Start and Finish | |
| The start and finish appear as banners suspended between poles in the 3D view. You enter the terrain at the start point and must pass under the finish banner to finish. The map symbols are descibed in the map section below. |

| Control Points | |
| You must visit the control points in the order they are shown on the map Control points are indicated by flags. The location of the control flag relative to nearby features is described on the control card, as is a code number to identify the control. You may discover the code number of a control flag in the terrain by moving the mouse cursor over the control flag. Walking very close to the flag will register your presence (record a "punch") and the globe on the stand will illuminate and the control card number will change colour. |
The control flag is the red and white object on th left. (The object on the right is a boulder) |
| The Map | |
| The map shows contours (lines of equal height) as brown lines, boulders as black dots, the start as a red triangle, controls points as red circles centred on the control position and the finish as a double red circle. The map may not be rotated and north points upwards. |

| The Compass | |
| The compass indicates which direction you are facing relative to north. The needle is rotating around a vertical axis (as if the compass were held flat) but has been tilted to afford us a good view (so that it appears to rotate about a horizontal axis - as if the compass were held vertically). The red end of the compass needle always points north. If you face north, the needle points up the screen. If you face south, the needle points down the screen. If you face east, it points to the left and, if you face west, it points to the right. |
The compass appears as such. Experiment with it near the start to properly understand it. The compass may be moved by clicking on it and dragging it to a new location. |
